Founded in 1831 by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Mount Auburn was the first landscaped cemetery in the country. Many prominent Americans are buried here, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Winslow Homer. The cemetery is also an arboretum, sculpture garden and wildlife sanctuary. Copps Hill Burial Ground Founded in 1659 as Windmill Hill, this is the city's second oldest burial ground. Copps Hill is located along the Freedom Trail and contains the remains of thousands of local artists, merchants, shipyard owners and notable anti-slavery activists.
